Southeast University (SEU) and Liyang, Changzhou have signed an agreement to collaborate on the establishment of an Innovation Center for Infrastructure Safety and Smart Technology.

Prof. Zhang Guangjun, president of SEU, and Qi Jiabin, secretary of CPC Changzhou Municipal Committee, attended the signing ceremony held on February 2.

Changzhou is in a critical period of the transformation of economic development mode which requires a robust innovation capacity, said Qi Jiabin. Recently the city has launched 20 policies to promote innovation, 30 guidelines for innovation-driven high-quality development, and several funding programs for technological innovation, he added.

SEU, being at the forefront of engineering disciplines including civil engineering, information and communications technologies (ICT) and electrical engineering, will share its resources with Liyang and work together to perform cutting-edge research in the development of smart technology for construction of infrastructure, said Prof. Zhang Guangjun.

According to the agreement, this center is expected to be built into a world-class smart technology R&D platform to improve infrastructure safety. This will create a fertile ground for both SEU and Liyang to attract top-quality talent and generate ground-breaking infrastructure industry solutions.

In its initial phase with an investment of 500 million yuan, the center’s focus will be on building laboratories for infrastructure safety & emergency management system, smart construction & maintenance, and industrialized building system & prestressed precast technology. In its second phase, the center will be prepared for applying to become a national-level R&D platform to undertake major infrastructure projects such as extreme environment simulation.

City leaders Fang Guoqiang and Yang Fen were also present at the signing ceremony.
