On October 17, eleven locally transmitted cases of Covid-19 (nine in Nanjing and two in Wuxi) were confirmed and registered in Jiangsu province.

Nineteen local asymptomatic carriers (four in Nanjing, six in Xuzhou, two in Suzhou, two in Nantong, and five in Taizhou) were newly reported in the province.

Five inbound symptomless cases were newly reported in the province.

Five hospitalized Covid-19 patients were discharged, while 13 asymptomatic carriers (eight local and five inbound) were released from medical observation.

A hundred and twenty confirmed cases (78 local and 42 inbound) are still undergoing treatment at designated hospitals, while 284 asymptomatic carriers (245 local and 39 inbound) are currently under medical observation in isolation.

As of this update, China's list of virus transmission zones stands at 2,332 high-risk, 1,557 medium-risk, and 310 low-risk areas.

Experts noted that the Omicron variant of the coronavirus — with increased transmissibility, a shorter incubation period, and higher rates of asymptomatic transmission — has imposed a new challenge for epidemic controls. It is necessary to continue practicing personal protective measures during all transmission scenarios and keep up with relevant information from official sources. Residents are urged to avoid unnecessary travel abroad or trip to areas with medium- or high-risk status or places with confirmed local cases.

The implemented health protocols are as follows:

1. Please provide needed information in time and support Covid-19 prevention and control measures. Those coming or returning to the province from areas with locally confirmed cases or those whose travel histories overlap any confirmed cases should inform their employers, communities, or hotels upon arrival as soon as possible. Please cooperate in providing information, taking nucleic acid tests, and undergoing isolated medical observation.

2. Take immediate on-arrival PCR tests. All short-term visitors (tourists) must complete their on-arrival PCR tests according to the requirement of local authorities. Do not physically attend any events, gatherings, and meetings or enter public places such as bars, spas, movie theatres, and internet cafés while awaiting a negative result. Keep the mask on and avoid using public transport when going outside.

3. Seek inoculation. It is the most effective way against Covid-19 as it helps build herd immunity, mitigate the pandemic’s impacts, and end its spread. People eligible for vaccination, with no contraindications, should all be inoculated.

4. Maintain routine prevention and control. Keep the mask on, especially in crowded places with poor ventilation. Properly wear your mask and cooperate in temperature and health code checks and keep a one-meter distance away from others when you are in public areas such as malls, restaurants, and hotels.

5. Increase awareness of personal prevention. Maintain good habits for health such as washing hands regularly, wearing a mask, ventilating rooms more often, reducing gatherings, using serving chopsticks, and dining separately. Seek medical treatment in line with regulatory procedures when symptoms including fever, dry cough, fatigue, nasal congestion, nasal discharge, sore throat, reduced sense of smell and taste, conjunctivitis (pink eye), muscle pain, and diarrhea show. Keep the mask on and avoid using public transport when seeking treatment.
